What should I look for when buying a new thermostat?

  • 0
  • 0

Quick question for the pros here!
I need a new thermostat and holy cow, there are a ton of them. What’s the biggest thing I need to think about? Are some features just a gimmick?
Which brands should I go for? Which should I avoid like the plague?
Any and all advice is welcome!

    Hey Edwinc,
Finding a new thermostat can be a pain! Here’s a simple breakdown of what to keep in mind:
Smart or Simple? Smart thermostats are great if you want to control everything from your phone, save energy automatically, and get more advanced features. If you just need something to set a temperature and forget it, a basic programmable thermostat is a better fit.
Compatibility is Key: This is probably the most important part. Before you buy anything, you need to check if it will work with your heating and cooling system. Specifically, look for a “C-wire” (common wire). Many advanced thermostats need this for power, and if you don’t have one, you might need an adapter or a different type of thermostat.
Features to Look For: Some features are just for show, but others are genuinely helpful. Things like geofencing (it adjusts the temp when you leave and come back) and learning your habits to create a schedule for you can be really useful for saving money.
Do Your Research: Instead of focusing on specific brands to buy or avoid, check out user reviews for the type of thermostat you’re interested in. Look for comments on installation, ease of use, and how well it works with different systems. Sticking with well-known manufacturers is usually a safe bet.
Hope this helps you make a good choice!

    Hey Edwinc,
Jumping in here with a couple more points!
Ease of Use: This is a big one. Some thermostats have a reputation for being super user-friendly, right out of the box, while others have a steeper learning curve. A great thermostat is one you don’t have to think about too much. You want it to just work.
Thermostat Location: It might sound obvious, but where the thermostat is located in your home can really affect its performance. Make sure it’s not on a wall in direct sunlight or near a vent, as this can mess up its temperature readings.
System Type: Finally, just double-check if your system is single-stage or multi-stage. Not all thermostats work with every type of system, so knowing this detail is crucial for finding the right match.
Hope you find a great one!
