Kitchen Reno Brainstorm: Dimmers are In, What Else Should Go?

  • 1
  • 1

Right, so we’re finally biting the bullet and giving the kitchen a bit of a spruce-up! Top of my list is definitely getting some proper dimmers installed – I’m so over having just ‘on’ or ‘off’ lighting, especially when I’m trying to set the mood for dinner or just chill with a cuppa.
But, you know how it is, once you start thinking about one thing, your mind just goes wild with all the other bits you could do! Since we’ll have electricians in for the dimmers anyway, it feels like a prime opportunity to tackle other things without paying for separate call-outs.
My big question is: what else is worth upgrading or adding while we’re at it? I’m trying to figure out what’s genuinely useful versus just a ‘nice to have’ that’ll blow the budget. We’re not talking a full rip-out and rebuild here – more like smart, impactful changes.
And, speaking of budget, that’s another biggie. How much should I realistically be looking to spend on these kinds of ‘add-on’ upgrades? Like, what’s a reasonable cost for swapping out sockets or adding some clever storage? I don’t want any nasty surprises!
So, spill the beans! What have you guys done in your kitchens that made a real difference?
Any specific lighting ideas that go well with dimmers? Maybe under-cabinet strips or something?
What about sockets? Are those USB charging points actually worth it? Or maybe ones with built-in switches?
Clever storage solutions that don’t involve tearing out all the cupboards? I’m thinking pull-out shelves or smart organisers.
Small appliance upgrades that really upped your kitchen game? Like a fancy new tap with a pull-out spray, or a hot water dispenser?
Any other ‘little’ things that just made your kitchen more functional or look loads better without costing a fortune?
Cheers for any tips you’ve got!

Lighting is key, and you’re already on the right track. Under-cabinet LED strips with dimmers were probably the single best thing I did. It makes the kitchen feel so much more modern and practical. You can have bright light for chopping veg and a lovely soft glow for a late-night cuppa. It’s a game-changer.
Don’t skip the sockets! Seriously, while you have the electricians in, get those USB charging ports. You will use them constantly. I’d also recommend putting some extra sockets in sneaky places, like inside a cupboard or on the side of a kitchen island. They’re amazing for things like a stand mixer or a coffee grinder that you only use occasionally.
Storage hacks are your friend. I’m all for clever storage over tearing everything out. The pull-out shelves are a godsend—no more getting on your hands and knees to find the saucepan at the back! And for corners, those lazy susan carousels are a lifesaver. You can also get these great little risers and dividers for your cupboards that make everything feel so much tidier.
Think about the faucet. A new tap with a pull-out spray isn’t just about looks; it’s so practical. Washing out big pots and pans is ten times easier, and it just feels like a proper upgrade.
